Browne accuses SU of being misleading on Bailey Allen controversy
NUIG President Jim Browne has said that university management did not refuse the use of the
Bailey Allen Hall for College Week and that the only refusal was on the consumption of alcohol in the hall. He added that the Students' Union was being "misleading" on the issue.
Speaking to Sin, Browne said: "We made it clear to the Students' Union that there was to be no alcohol available in the Bailey Allen Hall for the College Week events. We did not refuse the events themselves."
When asked about the availability of alcohol during the upcoming Gala Banquet, Browne pointed out: "A dinner environment is very different to a concert environment. The Bailey Allen Hall was built using private contributions. We don't want it wrecked by hundreds of drunken students."
However, SU President Donna Cummins claims: "We didn't even request a bar in the hall, but despite this and all our reassurances, they still said no."
The SU will protest the issue on March 6th by picketing the Gala Banquet.
