The Hub to get a facelift
Plans have been drawn up to give a much-needed overhaul to The Hub, subject to getting approval from the Projects Fund. If approved the space which SU President, Donna Cummins describes as presently being “a black mark on the whole new building” will be converted into a proper social space for students.
“I believe we are the only university that does not have a social space”, said Donna. “We are really excited about the plans and are hoping they will be approved by the Projects Fund.”
If given the go-ahead works are expected to begin in June and the proposed finishing date is the end of September.
While the space will continue to serve food there will also be a microwave installed for students who are watching their cash to bring in their own food. The much-loved pool tables will remain and will be joined by a table tennis table. The now unused Socs Box will be removed to make way for offices for Health Promotion and ALIVE.
Couches and comfy seats are to be brought in so students can relax and unwind but there will be an area for students who wish to work on projects or use their laptops. Donna said, “We will ensure that the wireless connectivity is perfect and there will be a big increase in the number of plug sockets. Hopefully this will relieve some of the pressure on the Reading Room.”
The SU has expressed the hope that this will increase the footfall of students into Aras na Mac Léinn. “We really hope that this might encourage more students to make use of the space. If they see what goes on they might be encouraged to take part in things,” added Donna.
Word on funding approval is due before the end of May.
