Bridge to link NUIG with Fisheries Field
A pedestrian bridge linking Fisheries Field with NUI, Galway is to be built. Plans for the proposed new bridge will go on public display in early June and this will be followed by a public consultation period.
Plans for the bridge, which is collaboration between Galway City Council and NUIG were put before the Lough Corrib Navigation Trustees last week.
The bridge, estimated to cost €1 million will improve access for pedestrians and cyclists, and provide them with an alternative route to University Road.
The bridge is proposed to be a cable stay bridge over the Eglinton Canal which will link Fisheries Field, (where the Festival Big Top is located for the Galway Arts Festival) directly opposite Galway Cathedral with the university grounds.
The public consultation period will end in September and if planning permission is granted construction could begin by Christmas.
