Two PC Suites Close
Students have reacted angrily to the closure of two PC suites on the Concourse. The Bromwich and Corrib Suite have both been shut down.
Students Union President Donna Cummins said she has received complaints about the issue from students.
"Did they really need to shut down the suites on the Concourse, a place with the largest footfall?" she asked.
"The queues are crazy as it is. What's worr
ying is the fact that it was done under the rada
r," she added.
The prospect of waiting in line for PCs as deadlines loom is likely to cause frustration amongst the students
The closures and change of use are part of the university's attempts to redistribute space. Most of the computers from the two computer suites were moved to other locations on campus.
The Bromwich Suite closed last summer and the space was redistributed to MIS, which merged with Computer Services.
In November the Corrib Suite on the Concourse was also closed and the space was redistributed to a researcher who is attached to the Chemistry Department.
"Students currently face huge difficulty during peak hours of the day getting access to computer suites. This is particularly the case in recent years as students are being given regular assignments so computers are essential in order for them to meet their academic deadlines. The University needs to recognise that computers are not a luxury and they are obligated to provide sufficient access if we want our University to figure in league tables and not be outdone by other Universities who can provide their students with better facilities," said Donna.
